Meet the Kite Mecca Founder | Lucas, Kitesurfing Pioneer

About the Founder — The Story Behind Kite Mecca
From a Magazine Page to a Life on the Water
It all started with a picture.
At the end of the 1990s, during a visit to his father’s family, a teenage Lucas stumbled upon a windsurfing magazine. One photo—Flash Austin flying over a massive Hawaiian wave—lit a fire inside him that would shape the rest of his life.
Though he had never tried a water or board sport before, something about that image clicked. At a time when the internet was still new, he began searching obsessively for anything related to this mysterious new sport: kitesurfing.
He even received a response from Robby Naish himself, who sent him a kite manual that became his first sacred textbook. In 2000, armed with a 2-line Wipika FreeAir kite, an Australian-made board from Stonker, and boundless curiosity, Lucas hit the water.
There were no schools, no instructors, and no safety systems—just experimentation and bruises. Every session was a risk. People today can’t imagine how dangerous those early kites were.
Learning Through Pain and Progress
Kitesurfing has given Lucas a life of freedom and adventure—but it’s also come at a price. Over the years, he suffered multiple injuries that shaped his journey:
A spinal injury after being accidentally hit in the back by a student’s board
A broken hand during a heavy crash
A knee injury that required surgery and months of rehab
That last one nearly ended it all. After reviewing his case, one of the most respected orthopedic surgeons told Lucas he would never kitesurf again. But yeah, he don’t give up and he’s still out there—jumping, flying, and enjoying every moment on the water.
These injuries didn’t make him a better rider, and the knee has more or less stopped his technical progress. But it didn’t stop the joy. He’s simply happy to ride, to feel the wind, and to keep doing what he loves most— teaching new generations with a smile on his face.
A Polish Kitesurfing Pioneer
As one of the first kiters in Poland, Lucas became a walking encyclopedia of the sport. He translated resources, wrote the first Polish kitesurfing dictionary, and contributed to the growth of a grassroots community.
He co-founded a business distributing brands like Skywalker, Globerider, Blade and Best Kiteboarding, helping bring the sport into the mainstream. He also contributed technical articles and spot guides to the Polish Kitesurfing Association (PZKite), helping hundreds of riders improve their skills and safety.
From the Corporate World to the Water World
In 2009, Lucas left behind a corporate career as a financial director and returned to the sport full-time. He became an instructor, and later founded Surferr’s Aid Rampant Foundation, the first Polish organization (and one of the first in Europe) to use water sports as a therapeutic tool for disabled and socially excluded people.
He helped create and teach Sitkiting, a method for teaching people in wheelchairs how to kitesurf.
Finding Paradise in Las Terrenas
Eventually, Lucas landed in the Dominican Republic, where he discovered Las Terrenas—a rare place where summer never ends, the wind is consistent, and the water is turquoise and flat.
Here, he founded Kite Mecca, a school built not just on technique, but on decades of experience, passion, and a love for the lifestyle that only kitesurfing can offer.
